CYCLE SUNDAYS
Post-COVID stasis and "cyclephobia". Ambient interest in cycling was high, but active participation stalled—only 1 in 4 Londoners had cycled in the past year, with severe diversity gaps among women and BAME communities.
Previous TfL ads asserted that "cycling is safe". However, negative framing backfired — reassuring people about road collisions only reinforced their fear of heavy rush-hour traffic.
Londoners didn't need safety lectures; they craved social activity. Rather than fighting cyclephobia, TfL pivoted to inspiring cyclephilia — leveraging Sundays as the quietest, most social day on London's roads.
TfL shifted from being a distant transport authority lecturing about health benefits to a community enabler.
Creating a social movement that turned cycleways from scary to sociable — pairing quiet Sunday roads with Strava clubs, community businesses & cycle rental passes.
